Alma's Story
Alma arrived at House of Mercy on September 7, 2021. She traveled from her home in Mexico City to Ensenada to be with her son Jonathan who had been admitted to the Ensenada General Hospital due to a work related accident that left him with third degree burns on 80 percent of his body. When the doctors told her that he would be in the hospital for several months, Alma came to be with him.
Alma describes seeing Jonathon for the first time as a completely overwhelming experience. Her son's condition was critical and seeing him in so much pain made her feel helpless. To make matters worse, Jonathan's employer deemed the accident as negligence and refused to pay any medical expenses. Alma knew that she was going to have to advocate for her son's medical care and that paralyzed her. Those feelings melted away that evening when she came to House of Mercy and met Pastor Francisco and Elizabeth. She immediately knew she would not be navigating this nightmare alone.
Alma said, “The financial support that people give to House of Mercy is a blessing for people like me who arrive with little money and have nowhere to stay. We arrive in stressful circumstances worried about our loved ones. They welcome us, give us a place to rest, and feed us the most delicious food with zero cost! They pray for us and our loved ones in the hospital and they help us through this process.”
Jonathan's hospital stay and after care visits took over a year. While his body still has a lot of healing to do, he is ready to travel safely now. Jonathan said, “For a long time I didn't know what was going to happen but my mom told me that God has a plan for my life and I know that I'm going to heal completely from this.” Alma plans to take her son home with her back to Mexico City in February 2023.
