Abuela Amalia
Rosario Guadalupe Tobar Romero, better known as Abuela Rosa, was born in 1955 in Baja California. She was raised alongside five siblings by both parents. She shared that she didn’t complete the first grade due to her spirited nature, which led to challenges with her teacher and her expulsion from school. Marrying at a young age and lacking formal education, she dedicated herself to homemaking and raising four children: Francisco Javier, Cecilia, Claribel, and Luis Angel.
Abuela Rosa enjoyed knitting, making alphabet soup, and watching soap operas when she had time. She no longer has the mobility for the first two and the soap operas of today, she says, are pure rubbish. Her favorite memories include eating Chinese-style chicken with pineapple. She also takes great pride in her children and cherishes memories of their early years. Her advice to the younger generation is simple: "Always do good and maintain respectful behavior."
Adopt an Abuelo
Casa del Abuelo cares for more than 20 abuelos at a time. They operate entirely on donations to cover expenses for water, propane, gas, food, transportation, and medicine. For $50 a month you can help provide these essential items for an abuelo.
