Abuelo Manuel
Manuel Camacho Castro lived in Mexicali, Baja California most of his life. He went to college and studied agricultural engineering. He enjoyed working in his field for the Mexican State Government of Baja California. While he was successful in his career, he did not have the same luck in his romantic relationships. He never married or had children.
Manuel moved to Ensenada a few years ago with his older brother who was his caregiver. When his brother passed away, he moved into Casa del Abuelo. He shared that living at the ministry has been a blessing. His favorite thing about living here is how peaceful and happy he feels.
Manuel is 69 years old and is still able to care for his own basic needs such as feeding, dressing and bathing himself. He enjoys the company of the other abuelos and spends his days talking with them and playing board games. His favorite activity is listening to music. When asked what his best advice for a younger generation was he said, “Youngsters, behave and treat others with respect.”
Adopt an Abuelo
Casa del Abuelo cares for more than 20 abuelos at a time. They operate entirely on donations to cover expenses for water, propane, gas, food, transportation, and medicine. For $50 a month you can help provide these essential items for an abuelo.
