Abuela Juanita

Juana Eguia Loera was born and raised in Tamaulipas, Mexico located directly under Texas. Her father passed away when she was only a few weeks old. She only remembers him from stories her mother told her and a few old pictures she saw of him. She knows that he was tall and he liked wearing cowboy hats.

Juana also had five siblings, all of whom have passed away now. When she was 13, one of her older sisters got married and moved to Ensenada. Juana came with her and has lived here ever since.

Juana only worked until she became a wife and mother. She worked at a fish market packaging fish for shipment, a carpet factory, and a papermill. She was in her early 20’s when she married her late husband, Rene. They had two sons together, Humberto and Pier. Her favorite memories are of the four of them spending time together.

At 71 years old, Juana is in good physical health. However, her mental health is unstable. She was only at Casa del Abuelo for a few months while Angelica found a facility that was better suited for the type of care Juana needed. While she was there, she shared her secrets to living a happy life. One, love your neighbor more, and the other, stay away from vices. They are not good for you and destroy lives.
