Abuelo Jose

José Ramos Calderón was born December 7, 1954 in Michoacan, Mexico. He came to Ensenada when he was 15 looking for work. He found a job as a house painter, a job he held for forty years. He was married for a time. He says the best thing that came out of that marriage was his daughter Hilda and the four grandchildren she gave him. Some of his happiest memories are of babysitting his grandkids when they were little.

Jose’s daughter and her family moved to Texas in October 2020. Unable to take her father with her, Hilda made arrangements with Angelica for Jose to live at Casa del Abuelo. Though he misses his daughter and his grandchildren, Jose said that living at Casa del Abuelo has been a huge blessing for him. He feels protected and loved by Angelica and Pastor Nicolas.

Jose has suffered three strokes over the last few years that have left him without the use of one leg and limited use of one arm. He uses a wheelchair and needs someone to help him with almost everything except he can feed himself. His favorite food is rotisserie chicken. He likes spending time with the other abuelos and sitting in the sun in the afternoons. His greatest wish is for the ability to walk again so that he can go visit Hilda and his grandkids. Jose has worked hard to strengthen his body and is currently able to use a walker. He asked for your prayers for continued healing to reach his goal.
