Abuelo Filiberto
Filiberto Ramos Cisneros is 85 years old and struggles with his memory. He doesn't remember his childhood but he knows he had a large family with several siblings. When he was a young man, he traveled from his home town in Durango, Mexico to the Ensenada area of Baja California in search of a childhood friend. When he arrived he found out that his friend had passed away.
Filiberto decided to stay in Baja and made a life for himself in Maneadero. He got a job at a fruit stand. He worked in Texas for a season. He remembers the beautiful flowers and the cold weather there. He joined the Mexican army and played drums in the military band. He was married twice. He had four children with his first wife. When she passed away, he remarried.
Abuelo Filiberto was living alone and having trouble caring for himself when Angelica invited him to come to Casa del Abuelo. He admits that he was reluctant to come because he was afraid that he would lose what was left of his independence. What he found instead was quality care and a group of people that have become like family to him.
Adopt an Abuelo
Casa del Abuelo cares for more than 20 abuelos at a time. They operate entirely on donations to cover expenses for water, propane, gas, food, transportation, and medicine. For $50 a month you can help provide these essential items for an abuelo.
