Abuelo Charly

Carlos Ramón Cervantes García, better known as Charly was born August 31, 1955. He grew up in Obregon, Sonora. Sonora borders the Gulf of California and is directly under Arizona which might be why Charly speaks perfect English. He is the youngest of four and was raised by his mother and stepdad. From a young age, he worked odd jobs to help support his family. He only completed elementary school.

As a young man, Charly landed a job as a deep sea diver that took him on many adventures. He loved the job, being in the ocean, and being surrounded by fish. He traveled up and down both sides of the Mexican coastline. He can still remember every boat he ever worked on and every name of all the ports in Mexico. His favorite memories include watching the stingray surfing the waves and eating fried fish every day.

The constant traveling and long stretches out at sea cost Charly a wife and children. He never settled in an area long enough to keep a relationship long term. He believes that being single his whole life contributed to what he referred to as his delinquent years where he spent much of his free time drunk or high. What he likes most about being at Casa del Abuelo is that he is no longer alone and that has kept him from falling back into those old habits created out of loneliness.

Charly came to Casa del Abuelo in August 2018. Angelica shared with us that he has severe osteoporosis that is affecting his back and hips. He uses a walker to get around but he can do almost everything on his own. Charly is happy, smiley, and talkative. He loves to play dominoes and cook for the other abuelos. The abuelos love his flour tortillas and fried chicken. Charly asked for your prayers for complete healing of his body and for continued spiritual growth.
